MNSAH’s Spring Tour in 2014 looked beyond state boundaries when we traveled to Des Moines, Iowa. Our tour of Des Moines included spectacular late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century structures, vibrant historic neighborhoods, and an array of modern buildings designed by some of the best known architects of the 20th century.
Tour highlights included Salisbury House, a 42-room Tudor style mansion, Butler House, a magnificent Moderne style residence said to be “the world’s most modern house” at the time of its construction in 1937, and the historic Sherman Hill neighborhood. We also toured the Des Moines Art Center designed by Eliel Saarinen, with additions by I.M. Pei, and Richard Meier, and Drake University which includes buildings by Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Mies van der Rohe, Harry Weese, and Edward Larabee Barnes.
