Join your MNSAH friends for a behind-the-scenes tour of Roselawn Cemetery, including the 1904 Cemetery Chapel and Administration Building. Designed by Saint Paul architect and Cass Gilbert protégé Thomas Holyoke, this 1904 complex reflects the English Village Architecture style popular in the late-19th and early 20th centuries. The style is an idealized view of a time before the Industrial Revolution and a rejection of the “modernism” that resulted from it.

The buildings exemplify the charm and craftsmanship of this style, from the intricate carvings on the vergeboards at each building’s entrance to the grand expanse of the chapel’s exposed hammer-beam trusses. They also reflect a time of transition in both Cass Gilbert’s and Thomas Holyoke’s careers, as Gilbert moved to the national stage and anointed Holyoke as his Minnesota heir apparent.
